G.O.O.D Music’s Pusha T recently talked about the upcoming release of his highly anticipated My Name Is My Name and why the project can stand against any LP this year including Drake’s newly released Nothing Was The Same.
Along with coming out a couple weeks after Drake’s new LP, Pusha said his debut solo album would hold its own against Jay Z‘s Magna Carta Holy Grail and Kanye West‘s Yeezus.
“I’m so happy that my album actually is coming out around everybody’s. At the time, when it got pushed back in July, I was praying that it was not pushed back, because I wanted it to come out in the mix of all these rows of albums so now I want y’all to hear. But this is fine, too, because it can come out on the heels of [Nothing Was The Same] and people can compare them. Jay Z’s my favorite rapper. It’s cool. Kanye came out. Jay Z, Kanye, Wale, J. Cole, Drake, that doesnt [matter]. I look at Ye and Jay differently than I look at the rest. Album of the year. Hip-hop album of the year. For sure. No doubt in my mind.” (VH1)
Pusha recently said he made sure to come hard on his new LP by going into a late musical 90′s zone.
“I didn’t learn the art form of rapping in those different stages — I only knew to be as ill as you can be lyrically,” he said. “It’s all about creating that nostalgia. When it came to My Name Is My Name I said to myself, ‘Man, I wanna make something that I love and I wanna listen to myself. I wanna go to an era and revisit an era that was strictly about lyrics.’ So I had to go to ’95-’99 — a great mixtape era, a great B.I.G./Jay era. To me it was just more so about re-creating the greatness of an amazing time.” (MTV)
Despite having behind-the-scenes help from Kanye, Pusha opted out of featuring Yeezus on the 12-track project.

Earlier this month, Kanye gave a rant-filled speech at the G.O.O.D Music member’s album release party in New York.
Pusha-T was the guest of honor at his “My Name Is My Name” album listening party Wednesday night in Brooklyn, but all eyes were on the man standing next to him: Kanye West. After asking the DJ to wait before starting the next track, West got on the mic and delivered one of his fiercest rants to date, expressing his support for Pusha-T by ripping some of the usual suspects (“corporations”) and taking aim at some new supposed trend biters (people who wear camouflage prints, people who “put numbers on the back of their t-shirts”). My Name Is My Name is slated to release October 8.
